Find out moreCanadians love the Toyota RAV4, and for good reason—it’s practical, reliable, and versatile. The 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, also known as the RAV4 Prime, takes all of that to the next level by adding a jolt of electric power and a lot of extra oomph. If you're looking for an SUV that’s as happy on a long road trip as it is doing the school run, this one's a serious contender.
Under the hood, this isn't your average RAV4. It’s got a sophisticated powertrain that combines a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder engine with a powerful electric motor and an 18.1 kWh battery. The result is a total system output of 225 kW (302 horsepower), making the RAV4 Prime the most powerful RAV4 ever. This setup allows for some seriously quick acceleration, going from 0 to 100 km/h in just over six seconds. It’s got standard Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive, so you can count on solid grip no matter the weather.
One of the biggest draws of the plug-in hybrid is its all-electric range. The 2025 RAV4 Prime is estimated to get up to 68 km of pure electric driving on a full charge. That’s enough for most people to handle their daily commute and errands without burning a drop of gas. When you do need to fire up the engine for longer trips, the hybrid system is incredibly efficient, with a combined fuel consumption of about 6.0 L/100 km. You can charge the battery at home with a regular 120V outlet (though it’s a bit slow) or get a faster charge with a 240V Level 2 charger, which can fill the battery in as little as 2.5 hours.
Inside, the RAV4 Prime is all about comfort and tech. You’ve got seating for five and a spacious cabin that feels well-built and quiet. Dimensions-wise, it measures 4.596 m long, 1.854 m wide, and 1.702 m high, with a wheelbase of 2.69 m. The cargo area remains generous, despite the battery, with 949 litres of space behind the rear seats, which is more than enough for groceries or gear. The dashboard is centred around an 8-inch Toyota Multimedia touchscreen that includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For those who want more, higher trims offer a larger 10.5-inch screen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, and a premium JBL sound system.
Toyota hasn’t skimped on safety either. The 2025 RAV4 Prime comes with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, a suite of advanced safety features. This includes a Pre-Collision System that can detect pedestrians and cyclists, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Full-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Plus, you get Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert as standard to help you out with those tricky parking lot manoeuvres.
With its blend of performance, electric-only capability, and everyday practicality, the 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid is a fantastic option for anyone wanting to reduce their fuel costs and carbon footprint without compromising on power or versatility. It’s a smart choice for the modern Canadian driver.
